Fall 2019 One Room Challenge - Week 3: bunkie progress!

I can’t believe we are already three weeks into the Better Homes and Gardens One Room Challenge! After Week 1 and Week 2, we’re now at the halfway mark on our cottage bunkie and panic has officially set in. As I sit back sourcing vintage and antique pieces to decorate the inside of the bunkie from my laptop, my brother and contractor Paul from Brancon has been doing all of the heavy lifting - literally.

Paint it black!

Thanks to Paul, the entire bunkie exterior is now a beautful soft black/charcoal gray colour called “Wrought Iron” by Benjamin Moore. It looks so pretty set against a backdrop of trees that are starting to change colour for fall and the Green River.

Windows and door

All of the windows and door are now installed and make a huge difference to the overall feel of the bunkie. Even with a large window facing the river and a smaller window facing the main cottage, the bunkie felt a little bit dark on the inside. Paul had the idea to install a small dormer and window above the door. We searched high and low at our Orillia Habitat for Humanity Restore as well as Kijiji and were very lucky to find one that was small enough for the space on Kijiji. Thanks to a quick pick-up and delivery from my boyfriend Grant, Paul was able to install the window the very next day.

A new shed!

Since the bunkie was the original shed on the property that housed all of our fishing gear, canoes and kayaks we needed a new shed. In the spirit of reducing, reusing and recycling, we had an older and very run down shed at our family farm that we brought to the cottage.

Paul used the original frame which was in good shape and positioned it close to where the bunkie used to be. After adding new siding, new shingles and fresh coat of Benjamin Moore’s “Wrought Iron” paint to match the bunkie it looks as good as new!

Only a couple of weeks left to finish and shoot this project and there is so much to do including electrical, insulation, finishing, painting and my very favourite … decorating! I have a small stash of antiques ready to layer in and a tonne of pillows to sew. Thank you for following along and if you get a chance, please take a peek at other featured and guest participants. There’s even another bunkie in the challenge this year and it is good!
