Fall 2021 One Room Challenge - Weeks 4-7: Chicken Coop Progress

It’s hard to believe but it’s already Week 6 of the One Room Challenge! After Week 1, Week 2 and Week 3 we took a bit of a break from blogging but definitely didn’t take a break from making progress on our chicken coop.

Chicken Coop Progress

After changing directions from the original coop design and deciding to rework an old ice fishing hut, we painted it “Toque White” by Sherwin Williams. Once the outside was sealed we started working on the inside by insulating with styrofoam and cladding with panelling that we had in the barn.

Nesting Boxes

In keeping with our plan to reuse as many materials as we could, Grant’s Dad Ralph just happened to have a few wine boxes that we could use. We had enough room to install 3 of them end to end in the coop and thought that would be ok for four hens as most hens end up having a favourite box anyways.

Roost

In addition to the wine boxes, Ralph also had some old broom handles and antique corbels. My Dad gave us a few pieces of weathered barn board from our farm so we designed a roost that would incorporate all of these materials.
